On Monday, I wrote an article on Tips for Traveling with a Partner. I asked my Facebook friendience for their best tips as well, assuming I’d incorporate them into the article.
People sent in so many wonderful comments that I couldn’t fit them all. I had planned to put them into a second article.
But then I realized the poignant, heartfelt advice being shared wasn’t an article.
It was a poem.
Every word in this is taken from the comments on that post.
On Traveling Together
First: have a partner.
Adore each other.
Set expectations.
Take space.
Know that things are going to go wrong:
stop
and take deep breaths.
Normalize doing some things apart.
Don't overcommit to a schedule.
S P A C E
is mandatory.
Every partner is different.
What stresses you out about travel?
Set expectations.
It’s you guys against the problem.
Just keep reminding yourself.
Write all expenditures down.
Both have a goal, something to explore:
learn tango,
work on Spanish,
rent bicycles on location.
Take photos.
Plan romantic surprises.
Have a second sleeping space.
Research in advance
so you don’t waste time on decisions.
Talk in advance about your
travel styles
visions
desires
stresses
needs
excitements
expectations
hopes
dreams
philosophies
what matters most
what will go wrong
Stay off social media.
Look each other in the eyes.
Know how much stress
your relationship can take.
Secretly get little happy presents for each other on fun stops.
Get clear on your needs
when it comes to transitions:
plan for re-entry
under commit.
Roll with it.
Select the right partner.
Stay present in the moment.
Meet them there.

Sara Ness
